Palazzo Pitti was built by a family of bankers famous in the Renaissance and afterwards acquired by the Grand Duchess of Medici as a ducal family house. Then it was expanded through the centuries becoming a royal residence. In its grand rooms (today the Palatine Gallery) and in the Boboli Gardens this palace received visits of the most prominent figures of culture and science, important statesmen and politicians as well as celebrated artists from all over the world.
During the times when Florence was the capital of the newly established Republic of Italy, Palazzo Pitti had been a royal residence of the Savoia family. So when you enter there you naturally get an impression to be invited to the one of the greatest European courts. The Galleria Palatina, a private collection of paintings owned by the grand dukes, is displayed in the official staterooms on the first floor of the Pitti Palace.
The extraordinary decoration of the Planetary Rooms, designed by the great Baroque painter Pietro da Cortona, creates an overwhelming effect of frescoes and stucco. It forms the background for the superb exhibition of paintings from the Medici collections, including masterpieces by Raphael, Titian, Rubens, and Van Dijk.
