Florence to San Gimignano Tour Description

The quaint village of San Gimignano, picturesque Chianti area and the medieval town of Siena cluster in the heart of Tuscany. They are unmissable spots for those who crave to get a deeper insight into the region’s history, traditions, and tastes. Our Florence to San Gimignano Tour includes Chianti and San Gimignano tour as well!

Our first stop is San Gimignano, a perfect example of a medieval town and, today, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Next, the tour continues to the enticing area of rolling hills, the home of ruby-red Chianti Classico. The tour will stop by an authentic Tuscan winery giving you a chance to visit its cellars and vineyards. Afterwards, we invite you to a wine tasting as well as a traditional Tuscan lunch featuring local food such as pasta, cured meats, cheeses, and pastries. In the afternoon, you will head to Siena. Here, one of the official guides will lead you on a tour of the city center pointing out the best of Siena tourist attractions. For instance, you will see the impressive Cathedral and Town Hall in the Piazza del Campo, the set of the Palio Horse Race. Finally, the tour will end with a brief but worthy visit to the marvelous Monteriggioni medieval fortress.

Activity Highlights

Tuscany overflows with exciting places to visit. Often, there are way too many to fit in a single Tuscan holiday. However, booking our Florence to San Gimignano Tour will allow you to explore some of the best places in Tuscany in a single day!

The tour’s itinerary is busy. However, we guarantee there will be no rush or stress! For instance, in San Gimignano, you will have plenty of time to explore the village’s quaint squares, splendid palaces, and ancient churches. The Chianti tour that follows will relax you with the fairytale-like scenery and the tasting of the local, full-bodied wines. The cherry on top of the Chianti experience is the lunch made up of fresh local produce and authentic dishes.

During the Siena guided tour, our multilingual expert guides take you on a lovely walk through the historic city center. You will not only learn about the history but also about the modern life in the city.

History Sneak Peek

The area we know as Tuscany today used to be the home of the advanced Etruscan civilization. Etruscans were doing really well until the Roman Empire annexed the area in 351 BC. After the fall of the empire, many rulers ruled and competed for the power over the region. Nonetheless, Tuscany emerged from it all as a potent political entity with its own rulers!

By the high Middle Ages, the cities of Pisa, Lucca, Arezzo, Pistoia, Florence and, of course, Siena became wealthy trading centers. The legend has it Siena was founded by the son of Remus. Therefore, the well-known symbol of the wolf caring for Romulus and Remus is as omnipresent here as in Rome.

As per Chianti, its existence has been conditioned by the wine it produces since the very beginning. In fact, Chianti was the name of the wine before it became an official name of the region! It only became an official area when three small villages (Gaiole, Radda, and Castellina) established so-called Lega del Chianti (League of Chianti) which became the spiritual and historical “soul” of the Chianti region.

Today, only a few selected wineries enjoy the privilege of calling their wines Chianti. While each winery has its unique recipe, the recipe must abide by the strict quality regulations of DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) to bear the name Chianti!

So, did we lure you in? Are you ready to dive deeper into Tuscan history, smells, tastes, and scenery? If so, book our Florence to San Gimignano Tour today! You will get much more than Siena out of it!
