What you'll do

Stir away from the crowds explore the art, architecture, and history of religious sites in Tuscany and Umbria. Our Tuscany tours from Siena can deliver just that! On this particular tour, you will travel from a setting of a famous movie to a site of a religious pilgrimage. Visit Assisi, Cortona, and Perugia!

The day starts with a visit to Cortona, a lovely hilltop town with a quaint ambiance and many architectural treasures. From this vantage point, the views of surrounding landscapes are simply breathtaking. No wonder Cortona was the setting of the inspiring movie Under the Tuscan Sun from the year 2003. [readmore]

Next, the tour takes you to Assisi, the birthplace of a very well known saint, San Francesco (St Francis of Assisi). It also sits on the top of a hill overlooking a valley surrounded by vineyards. Our expert guide will lead you through the streets and alleys of this Medieval town. You will also pay a visit to the Basilica of San Francesco Assisi featuring frescos of his life and the Santa Chiara church. After the guided walking tour, you get some time to wander around and relax.

Finally, the tour comes to a close in Perugia. You will be able to explore the town on your own and discover clandestine springs and fountains, beautiful views, Etruscan ruins, parks, and gardens!

History Sneak Peek

Assisi, like all Tuscan cities, was once a municipium of Roman Empire. After the fall of the empire and before the situation settled, Assisi suffered several barbarian invasions. However, around the year 1000, Assisi witnessed the enthusiastic development of religious spirit, the rise of strong middle class and wealthy merchants. Saint Francis was born into this prosperity. He spent his young life living like a noble. Nonetheless, after seeing the suffering of the less fortunate, he devoted himself to absolute poverty. His devotion was so impressive he developed an enthusiastic following which led to the creation of Franciscan Order.

Cortona, like Assisi, used to be a rich and powerful Etruscan town that became part of Roman Empire. On the other hand, the origins of Perugia are more uncertain.

There is much to learn and even more to see! Take advantage of the Tuscany tours from Siena and visit Assisi, Cortona, and Perugia!
