San Gimignano tour Description

Get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and instead, dive into the calm and picturesque Tuscan landscape. Our San Gimignano tour offers you an introduction to the art, architecture, and history of this small medieval town.

In the morning, our coach or minivan will take you north-west of Siena to the ancient town of San Gimignano sitting in the hills of Val d'Elsa. You will explore the town’s rich history as well as the secrets of local gastronomy and wine. The tour led by our expert guides will also teach you more about the beautiful Santa Fina pottery and other local crafts. In addition to all that, you will have an opportunity to learn about the origins of the only Tuscan white wine, the famous Vernaccia. Recognized by the D.O.C.G., it’s one of the most famous wines from the San Gimignano area.

Activity Highlights

Tuscan countryside offers a plethora of little treasures and indulgences; from the grand themes of history, art, and religion to more earthly pleasures like delicious food and succulent wine. It would be a waste to ignore this face of Tuscany as winemaking was one of the arts that shaped the region. However, getting around less busy areas of the region is not as easy. Public transport can be confusing and quite limiting.

Booking San Gimignano tour with us saves you from planning, organizing and, above all, worrying that something goes wrong. This expedition pampers you with comfortable transportation, knowledgeable and attentive guides as well as lucrative insight into San Gimignano cultural heritage. In addition to wine tasting, you will be treated to a tasting of local olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Besides all of the above, we provide you with simple online booking and an incredibly friendly cancellation policy. We understand holiday plans can change quite whimsically!

History Sneak Peek

San Gimignano sits on top of a hill rising 334m above sea level which makes it visible from great distance. Its towers made it even more so! Throughout history, this unassuming town has been famous as the town “with a hundred towers.” In the 13th century, the town counted as many as seventy-two towers within its borders. Thirteen of those towers still stand today.

Why the obsession with towers? Well, at the time, every rich family would build one to show of its economic power. In Middle Ages, towers were symbols of wealth and power because the construction process was not simple or cheap. Most of the materials needed to be dug up and imported. Naturally, only the richest families in town could afford to have one. In these old towers, the rooms were very narrow (usually 1x2m), there were only a few small openings and the walls were almost two meters thick.

Give yourself a chance to discover the less explored part of Tuscany. Book our San Gimignano tour today and treat yourself to a gastronomic as well as cultural experience!
