San Gimignano, Chianti Tours from Siena Description

Take advantage of one of our tours from Siena and discover the medieval town of San Gimignano, Chianti area, and lovely Montalcino.

First, the tour will head to San Gimignano also known as a city of a hundred towers and UNESCO World Natural & Cultural Heritage site. Our tour leader will impart to you all the key information so you can make the most of your free time in the town’s historic center. Here you will discover small artisan shops and quaint palazzos. San Gimignano is also special for its Vernaccia wine, a white wine exclusive to this area. Next, the tour will move on to Monteriggioni, an old crown-shaped fortress. Its walls date back to the 12th Century. Next on the itinerary is a wine tasting in a Chianti winery accompanied by of local salami, cured meats, cheeses and other local products.

Afterwards, the trip from Siena continues to Val d’Orcia, another UNESCO World Heritage site (since 2004). There, you will visit the medieval village of Montalcino which dominates the vast Brunello vineyards from a hilltop. The last stop of the day is in a local wine cellar where you shall taste the famous Brunello of Montalcino wine; one of the best wines in the world. Again, you will have a chance to savor other typical local products, as well.

Activity Highlights

The region of Tuscany is rich and diverse in the experiences it offers. Its eventful history, natural treasures, and flavorsome gastronomy are hard to resist. Confining your vacations to a single city, even as lovely as Siena, would be a pity. However, it’s not always easy to organize a trip around Tuscany, especially if you are interested in the small, clandestine places that are hard to reach.

Purchasing tours from Siena with us lets you immerse yourself in the exploration without worry. We will take care of all the organizational details like transport, reservations, and expert multilingual escorts.

The price of the San Gimignano, Chianti, and Montalcino tour includes a free pick-up service, travel by an air-conditioned minivan, wine tasting, light lunch composed of local dishes, a snack of cured meats and cheeses as well as a drop-off service.

Moreover, the tour offers you a great deal of flexibility to personalize your experience by giving you free time to explore in both San Gimignano and Montalcino.

History Sneak Peek

San Gimignano overlooks its surroundings from a hilltop. The town is visible from a great distance, even more so thanks to its towers. This tiny unassuming town is famous as the town with a hundred towers. In the 13th century, San Gimignano skyline featured as many as seventy-two towers. However, only thirteen of those towers still stand today.

Why such passion for tower-building? Well, at the time, every wealthy family wanted one. In Middle Ages, towers represented wealth and power as the construction process was costly and difficult. Most of the materials had to be mined and imported. Hence, only the wealthiest families in town could afford to build such extravaganza.

Montalcino is also centuries old. Its biggest gem, besides the marvelous views and ancient architecture, is the Brunello wine. Brunello di Montalcino is wine recognized all over the world.

In the past, the word “Brunello” didn’t actually refer to the wine but to the grape. It’s quite logical, the local grapes are small and brownish and the word “Brunello” means “a small brown one.” The locals call Sangiovese Grosso grape “Brunello” until today.

Tuscany wine tours are an experience to savor, literally and metaphorically. Book the tours from Siena to Tuscan countryside with us and give a new dimension to your holidays.
