According to the legend, it was the son of Remus himself who founded Siena. Consequently, the symbol of the wolf caring for the twins of Romulus and Remus is as omnipresent in Siena as it is in Rome. However, historical evidence points towards a different origin story! The historians established that the city is of Etruscan origin. Etruscans lived here for centuries until, in the 1st century BC, Romans took over Siena and turn it into their military colony.
The 12th century is the time Siena flourished, grew in wealth, power, as well as size. With the power grew its endless rivalry with Florence and bickering wars between the two Tuscan cities. At last, Florence won and the towns established a profitable alliance. Siena’s worst period of the decline came along in the 14th century in form of an aggressive plague outbreak that killed two-thirds of the population!
Today, the city flourishes as a favorite tourist destination as well as an important commercial hub. If you want to get the most of your visit to Siena, make sure to book our introductory Siena tours, you won’t regret it!
