History Sneak Peek

Did you know that the architectural uniqueness so typical for Sagrada Familia, Barcelona, today was not always the intention?

The Origin of Sagrada Familia

The construction began in the 19th century. Barcelonian bookseller, Jose Maria Bocabella, wanted a church dedicated to the holy family. Initially, he entrusted the planning and construction to the architect of the Diocese, Francisco de Paula del Villar y Lozano. However, the two men didn't get along, and Villar barely finished the crypt before he was fired.

Subsequently, in 1883, Boca Bella hired a young visionary Catalan architect, Antoni Gaudi, to supervise the project. We are so glad he did!

Gaudi's Church

La Sagrada Familia became Gaudi's life work. He poured into it all his ideas of nature-inspired modernist design and combined them with religious symbolism. He worked on it tirelessly until his untimely death on June 10, 1926. Given Sagrada’s extravagant design and size, the public started to refer to the church as the Cathedral. However, it was only an expiatory church. That is until 2010 when Pope Benedict XVI promoted the status of the church to a basilica.

Sagrada Familia Symbolism

After you have had visited the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, you will have learned a lot about the intricacy of its symbolism. Every curve and every stature has its meaning either referring to the biblical stories or nature.

For instance, each of the facades represents one phase of Jesus’ life and elements of nature. The Nativity Facade depicts the birth of Jesus and faces the sunrise. It also features various elements related to the creation of life in nature. The Passion Facade is much simpler in design and depicts the suffering and crucifixion of Christ. The facade faces west to emphasize the symbolism of death. The Glory Facade will be the largest one, once finished, it’ll depict the glory of the Christ as he rises from the dead and goes to heaven.

Under Construction

The Basilica of Sagrada Familia is still under construction and we hope to see it in all its glory by 2026. At the moment, you can enjoy the Nativity Facade (completed when Gaudi was still alive) and the Passion Facade. However, the third one is still in the initial stages of construction. Also, only two of the church's towers are accessible to visitors. It's hard to say which one is the best tower to visit at Sagrada Familia inside. They both offer a lovely view!
