Did you know the Leaning Tower (Torre Pendente di Pisa in Italian) is more commonly referred to as the bell tower or campanile? It was constructed as the last piece of the Cathedral complex in Pisa, Piazza Dei Miracoli. The first building standing was the Duomo di Pisa, next, the Baptistery. Then the works on the bell tower begun but the completion of the cemetery, Campo Santo, beat the campanile to the punch.
As the nickname suggests, the tower actually does lean to one side. The tower already started leaning during the initial stages of the project because the ground below was too soft to support it. Hence, all that delay with the construction. The lean became worse and worse, but the construction kept going. It took 344 years to complete it! At last, between the 1990 and 2001, the engineers finally succeed in stabilizing the building.
Despite all this hustle, the leaning campanile is a miracle of medieval engineering, probably one of the tallest bell towers in Europe. Eight stories high and circled with 207 columns throughout; it reminds of a big wedding cake knocked over by a clumsy uncle, Tod. In any case, Piazza Dei Miracoli of Pisa is the most striking collection of Romanesque architecture in Italy.
