The opulent Pitti Palace (Palazzo Pitti) has been home to some of the most important monarchs in Italian history. The list is long stretching from the Medici grand dukes to the Austrian-Habsburg Lorraine family and the Savoy kings.
In the second half of the 15th century, a wealthy banker Luca Pitti commissioned the construction of this stately Renaissance palace to rival the lavishness of the Medici Palace. However, Pittis fortune began to go down the hill. Upon bankruptcy, the family was forced to sell the palace which, ironically, ended up in Medici possession.
The Medicis transformed the place into the official residence of their dynasty. They not only enlarged the structure but also created a Renaissance garden on the grounds surrounding the palace.
When the Lorraine family took over control, they continued to improve the palace slowly bringing it to its present glory.
The Palatine Gallery resides in the left wing of the second floor, or the noble floor, of the palace and displays an impressive collection of old-master paintings. You can admire works of art by Botticelli, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio and Rubens sitting under impressive ceilings adorned with frescoes and stucco reliefs. The right wing of the second floor is home to the royal apartments, the private residence of the reigning families. Furnished with paintings, sculpture, tapestries, bronzes, and chandeliers, the apartments allow you to glimpse into daily life of monarchs.
