The Colosseum and ancient Rome go hand in hand. You cannot mention one and leave out the other. Standing east of the Roman Forum, this enormous amphitheater was commissioned by Emperor Vespasian of the Flavian around 70 AD. It was a gift to the people, a tool to keep the masses busy and happy. Roman emperors used it to feature all sort of fun games including gladiator battler as wild animal fights. After around four centuries of active use, it fell into neglect. Partly destroyed by an earthquake, partly because of the political and societal changes of the time. In any case, the remaining rubble of the fallen facade became a source of building materials for many new buildings in Rome.
Even if in ruin today, it was the largest amphitheater Romans ever built. The exterior had three levels of arched entrances and each level feature columns of a different style. The bottom level displayed simple Doric order, the middle followed with the Ionic order, and the upper level showcased Corinthian order. The building could fit over fifty-thousand spectators!! Thats an impressive number!
However, we cannot possibly sum up the wild and intriguing Colosseum history in a paragraph or two. Its so much better to learn while watching the once creat ruins with a vivid commentary! It helps to paint the picture of the past. So, dont wait around any longer, book Rome Colosseum Guided Tours with us and experience this landmark the way it was meant to be!
