Not all Colosseum secrets are accessible with a regular ticket or tour. Visiting the Colosseum underground and third ring requires a licensed guide and a special reservation. But you are in luck! Our Colosseum Underground Tour offers a full experience.
It kicks off in the dungeons of this mighty amphitheater with an exploration of the mysterious underground tunnels. This is where the gladiators prepared for the impossible fights ahead; where caged lions and tigers waited before entering the arena through trap doors… Next, you will walk down the Via Sacra of the Roman Forum and follow up to the first and second levels of the amphitheater. At last, you will access the third level which closed in the 1970s and is solely accessible as part of a VIP guided tour. It’s absolutely worth it as it gives you an astounding bird’s-eye view of the ancient Forum, the arch of Constantine, and the monuments of Rome.
Each year, thousands of travelers struggle to get the opportunity to explore the underground and third ring of the Colosseum. The demand is huge, but the office issues only 250 reservations per day. However, you can easily be one of the “chosen ones.” Booking our VIP Colosseum Underground Tour guarantees you special access to the usually restricted areas.
With us, there is nothing standing between you and the curious history of the largest Roman amphitheater. We will treat you to a Colosseum skip the line tickets as well as a friendly expert guide.
Our tour groups are never larger than 25 people, and even then we provide audio headsets to make sure you don’t miss a word. Moreover, the reservation and transaction fees are already included in the price, so no unpleasant surprises are waiting for you at the checkout.
Is this the best Colosseum Underground tour? Well, we will let you be the judge of that, but we believe we have a good shot at making your experience unforgettable.
Colosseum sits east of the Roman Forum. It was commissioned by Emperor Vespasian of the Flavian around 70 AD, a tool to keep the masses happy and entertained. Roman emperors used it to organize grand “spectacles” including gladiator battles and wild animal fights. The underground pathways (Ipogei), served to prepare gladiators for battle and shelter the wild beasts they had to fight. Both men and animals waited here for their turn before taking part in the violent, bloody spectacle.
Nonetheless, after around four centuries of active use, it fell into neglect. The partial destruction of the structure by a strong earthquake was the last drop. Still, the Romans found a use for it. The rubble from the collapsed facade was used as building material for numerous new buildings around the city.
Roman Forum, on the other hand, was once Rome’s bustling marketplace, its business district, and civic center. A former marshland, Romans had to drain the area to make it useable. It became the epicenter of city’s political and social activity.
There is so much more to tell but ee won’t bombard you with more details.
It’s better to hear the stories right there, on the site of the events they describe. Book your Colosseum Underground tour today and secure a VIP access to the most exciting parts of the structure!
We were able to reserve this tour for the New Year's Eve morning with only three days notice and the experience was great. Naturally, it was a crowded chaos outside the Colosseum but our guide got us through it fast and without any hassle. He was professional, friendly and very knowledgeable about the ancient Rome, wonderful experience!!!
Truly amazing! Fabulous guide! Just phenomenal!
Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and very engaging. The Colosseum underground was totally worth paying for, this part is only accessible with a tuor so it was also less crowded. I definitely recommend this tour.
Really liked our smaller group tour. The local guide was knowledgeable, fluent in English, friendly and happy to engage in QA discussions.
This tour was awesome! colosseum underground is cool
We spent two weeks in Italy, and this tour was exceptional. It lived up to our expectations and even excceded them! There were around 15 other people in the tour plus us. It was an exceptionally busy and crowded day, however, our guide got us in very quickly and the experience was great. The underground tour was an absolute highlight. The Roman Forum was also impressive. This tour is totally worth the money - make sure you wear comfy shoes and have some water with you!
Our guide was fantastic!
Absolutly amazing tour, well organized. Very informative!
So great to have an informed guide who is enthusiastic about the topic. Also, after seeing the crowds, skip the line access was absolutely invaluable! We couldn't imagine having to wait so long in the queue just to get in, and then not even knowing what we are looking at. Worth every penny!
