Venice is one of the unique cities not only in Italy but also in the world. The floating city we know today was once a marshy lagoon inhabited by fisherman since Roman age. In fact, it wasn’t until the 5th century AD the things got interesting. The distance of the islands from the mainland made the area particularly appealing during Attila’s barbaric invasions of Italy. The lagoon became a refuge and soon flourished into a bustling city. Its name is based on the Veneti people who once lived in the present-day Veneto region.
Due to its strategic position as a port, Venice became a trading hub. It thrived especially from the import of silk and exotic spices from the Orient. Venice was not only special for its one-of-a-kind architecture but also for being a republic with an elected Doge of Venice.
Hence the Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), located just off the side of St. Mark’s Basilica, became the center of Venetian social and political life. The palace is a spectacular example of Gothic architecture. In its time, it served as the seat of government of the Most Serene Republic of Venice. Members of the Venetian aristocracy elected the Doges who served as chief magistrates of the Republic of Venice for over 1,000 years beginning from the 7th century.
However, we are only scraping the surface. There is much more to learn or, better yet, see. Do not hesitate any longer and book your Venice walking tour today – you won’t regret it!
