Tuscany isn’t all about Renaissance art, gondolas, rolling hills covered in vineyards, and great food. Its terrain is also a rich source of the unique and exquisite Italian Carrara marble. Hence, visiting Carrara marble quarries is one of the most exclusive and unique day tours Siena has to offer. With us, you will experience the Marble quarries of Carrara riding a 4×4 Jeep as well as visit medieval cities of Pisa and Lucca with fast track tickets.
In the morning, our expert guide will drive you to places normally inaccessible to the public. First, you will go to an altitude of 900 m with breathtaking views by a 4×4 Jeep. While enjoying the views, you will find out all about the ancient and modern marble excavation methods. Plus, you will have the chance to observe the quarrymen at work, cutting marble or loading the large blocks onto trucks! Next, we invite you for a short break with Lardo di Colonnata tasting. Afterwards, you will travel higher into the mountains, to 1200 m where you can appreciate even more breathtaking views of the valley. When the visit of the quarry is over, the tour will continue to Pisa’s Piazza Dei Miracoli, home to the famous Leaning Tower. There, you are free to explore the landmarks on our own. Finally, you will travel from Pisa to Lucca. During the guided tour of Lucca, you’ll see and learn more about Piazza Anfiteatro, Guinigi Tower, and St. Martin’s Cathedral. At last, you will be able to unwind and shop around the ancient streets lined with antique shops in Lucca’s historic town center.
There are plenty of day tours Siena offers its visitors. However, not all are equal. Most of them will take you on the traditional wine tasting Chianti tours or visit Venice. These are all great and worthy of your attention. But if your heart yearns after something a bit more special from the usual museum visits, this is it. Our Carrara Marble Tour with visits of Pisa and Lucca is the perfect choice for you.
Booking the Carrara Marble Tour with us gives you an opportunity to get out of Siena’s crowded city center. Instead, it takes you on an unusual adventure! You will learn about what is Carrara marble and even how it’s excavated all the while enjoying an adrenaline-boost of riding a massive off-road Jeep. In addition, our expert guides will ensure you catch all the interesting facts. Moreover, after the quarry tour, you will savor one of the best Italian deli meats, the amazing Lardo di Colonnata!
After an exciting morning, you will get even more out of your day by enjoying a self-guided walk of Piazza Dei Miracoli in Pisa and a guided tour of medieval Lucca.
Tuscany region was formerly home to the advanced Etruscan civilization and later formed part of the Roman Empire. After the fall of the empire and a few random leaders, the region became a political entity with its own rulers.
What is Carrara marble and how does it fit into Tuscan history?
It’s a type of rare, high-quality blue-grey or white marble. You can only find it in the foothills of the Apuan Alps where it’s quarried in the city of Carrara. In fact, to this day, the world knows this area as “the capital” of marble.
The hard work and craftsmanship date back to the ancient Rome. Plus, many ancient masters and artists, including Michelangelo, used this marble to sculpt some of their best creations. Today, millions of tons of marble and other special stones are mined and exported from the quarries each year for various purposes. Who wouldn’t want a white marble kitchen countertop?
This is one of the day tours Siena offers to those looking for a dash of adventure. So, if you are tempted to reinvent the typical Tuscan vacation, book your Carrara marble tour with us today!
