History Sneak Peek

Gaudi worked on these marvelous creations simultaneously. Interestingly, both of them are still unfinished today but for different reasons. Despite this small hiccup, they represent a couple of the most exceptional examples of modernist architecture and are undoubtedly the best of Gaudi's works.

The Idea Behind Sagrada Familia Construction

The construction of Sagrada Familia started in the 19th century. A bookseller Jose Maria Boca Bella set his mind to building a church devoted to the holy family (Sagrada Familia). Initially, the architect of the Diocese, Francisco del Villar took charge of the project. However, he and Boca Bella didn't get along. In 1883, Boca Bella hired a visionary architect, Antoni Gaudi to take over the construction.

Gaudi's Life Work

La Sagrada Familia became Gaudi's life work that combined Christian symbolism with modernist design. Gaudi new he would not see Sagrada completed in his lifetime, that's how complex it was. However, he didn't expect to say goodbye to it so quickly either. He devotedly worked on the project until his untimely accidental death on 10th of June 1926.

Park Guell History - The Luxury Residential Neighborhood

Park Guell also has its story! The park was commissioned by Count Eusebi Guell. He had an intriguing idea of creating a garden city that combines nature with the concept of equal housing. However, Gaudi only managed to finish two buildings and paths around the park, instead of the planned 60 villas.

Why the Project Failed?

Why? Not many people showed interest. The project was unsuccessful and became city property in 1923, and its gates were opened to the public. Even if unfinished, its one of Gaudi's most colorful and whimsical projects. It features columns that resemble palm-tree trunks, rubble-surfaced arches growing out of the ground, quilts of ceramic tiles, and more.
