The origin of Spanish tapas is nestled in a cloud of legends and rumors. One of these legends tells a story about The Wise King of Spain, King Alfonso X, who was stricken with a severe disease which allowed him only to consume small portions of few and wine. After he recovered he issue a new decree which stated that no wine should be served in any bar unless it was served with a little bit of food. Another variation of the legend suggests that this decree was actually supposed to prevent ordinary folk who could not afford both food and wine from drinking on an empty stomach instead of getting something to eat. Others believe that the tradition comes from the custom of barkeepers to cover (taper) customers’ drinks with a slice of bread, cheese or cured meat to stop flies from getting in!
Traditionally, tapas solely served as snacks or appetizers you would eat in a local bar before dinner time which takes place around 9-11 pm in Spain. However, today, things are a bit different. The Spanish love to “tapear,” turn a collection of tapas into a full meal or “ir de tapas,” do a little tapas bar crawl. So, are you eager to learn the local ways?
