Experience the best of Iceland in one unforgettable day by combining a South Coast adventure with a northern lights tour. This small group experience allows you to explore some of the country’s most iconic natural landmarks during the day before heading out again in the evening to search for the aurora borealis.
Your day begins with pickup from your accommodation in Reykjavik, followed by a scenic drive along Iceland’s southern coastline. Along the way, you’ll pass geothermal power stations, volcanic landscapes, and, on clear days, enjoy views of glaciers and offshore islands. Your first major stop is Skógafoss waterfall, one of Iceland’s most famous cascades, plunging dramatically from a 60-meter-high cliff. Your guide will share stories and legends connected to the waterfall before you continue eastward.
Next, you’ll visit Reynisfjara black sand beach, known for its striking basalt columns, powerful Atlantic waves, and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising from the ocean. The journey continues to the charming village of Vík í Mýrdal, where you’ll have time to explore and enjoy views of the surrounding glacier-covered mountains.
On the return journey, you’ll stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where, conditions permitting, you can walk behind the curtain of water. Nearby, you’ll also discover Gljúfrabúi, a hidden waterfall tucked away in a narrow canyon, offering a quieter and more intimate nature experience.
After returning to Reykjavik, the adventure continues in the evening with a northern lights tour. Based on weather and aurora forecasts, your guide will select the best viewing location away from city lights. While waiting for the aurora to appear, you’ll stay warm with blankets, hot chocolate, and traditional pastries, while learning about the science and folklore surrounding the northern lights.
Although sightings can never be guaranteed, guests who do not see the aurora are invited to join a small group northern lights tour on another night, subject to availability. After a magical day and night, you’ll return to Reykjavik with memories of Iceland’s landscapes and skies that will last a lifetime.
