History Sneak Peek

Volterra is an ancient settlement of Etruscan roots. It was a powerful and rich town that stood behind a seven-kilometers-long wall. Already in the Etruscan times, the population exceeded twenty-thousand. The wealth, for the most part, came from its natural treasures hiding in the landscape such as metal and salt. Such prosperity attracted the attention of power-thirsty Romans who overtook the city in 283 BC.

San Gimignano also sits on a hilltop. It rises 334m above sea level and hence offers great views of the surrounding area. It's particularly famous for its numerous tower structures. Hence its nickname, the town with a hundred towers. However, only thirteen of the seventy-two former towers survive until today.

Why were the inhabitants of San Gimignano so obsessed with towers? In Middle Ages, such towers symbolized power and wealth because the building process was complicated and expensive. Most of the materials needed to be dug up and imported. Naturally, only the wealthiest families could afford to have a tower.

But this is just a tiny peek into what you will learn on this excursion from Siena. Book our Volterra and San Gimignano Wine Tasting Tour to not just see and hear but also smell and taste what Tuscany is all about!
