Chianti area hides between the provinces of Siena and Florence. Many Italians consider it the heart of the old Tuscany. More than its landscape, Chianti is famous for its high-quality ruby-red wine. In fact, the winemaking tradition in the region goes back hundreds of years.
The initial incarnations of Chianti wine appeared in the 13th century. Interestingly, the first Chianti wines were white. Still, they were amazing enough to make the wine and the vineyards it came from famous. Soon, the whole area was referred to as Chianti, not just the wine.
Chianti area became official in Middle Ages when three villages (Radda, Gaiole, Castellina) formed a Lega del Chianti. The territory of these three villages became the spiritual and historical heart of the Chianti region.
However, as grew Chianti's in popularity, so did the demand of other Tuscan towns for the right carry this label. Therefore, the borders of the Chianti area saw endless expansions and subdivisions along the course of history. Unavoidably, the variety of soil and microclimates of these new additions resulted in Chianti wine with various quality. The problem got so out of control, by the 1980s, public associated the once complex Chianti with a mass-market wine.
Thankfully, the DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) put an end to this madness. Today, only a few wineries can label their wines Chianti. Each wine estate keeps its own unique recipe which, however, needs to abide by the strict DOCG rules!
