History Sneak Peek

Pisa is much more than just a town with a funky bell tower. For centuries, the town grew and flourished in all areas including culture, commerce, and education.

Who founded Pisa?

The historians are not sure who founded Pisa. The mentions of the city in the ancient Roman texts only refer to it as the old city. In any case, thanks to its strategic location, Pisa came to be a canvas painted with global influences.

Fight for Independence

The city prospered the most during the 12th century when it stood as one of the strongest military and economic bodies in the Tuscan region. However, decline knocked on Pisa's door soon after. Finally, in 1509, Florence conquered Pisa and the town lost its independence for good. The hardest blow for Pisa in modern history was the WWII bombing. It took years of reconstruction to get the city into its current shape.

What about Lucca?

On the other hand, historical sources confirm that Etruscans are the ones to thank for the foundation of Lucca. However, like most cities in the region, Lucca became a Roman colony in 180 BC. Its history is as colorful and exciting as that of Pisa or Florence. It's up to you to discover more!
