Great experience : best ticket to take

Lovely medieval Pisa, once a fearsome maritime power, a worthy rival of Genoa and Venice, attracts most attention for an architectural marvel gone wrong. However, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is just a tip of the sightseeing iceberg. The best way to learn more is to dive deeper with a quality Pisa tour. It may sound a bit touristy and slightly cheesy, but a guided tour of Pisa can do miracles. How? By completely changing your perception of the city and its history. Coming along on one of the day tours in Pisa or sticking to a simple Pisa walking tour won’t leave you disappointed. The city’s eventful history left behind countless stories to be told and landmarks to be seen.

Any decent Pisa guided tour will prove to you that the Leaning Tower is just one of many noteworthy treasures the city has to offer. Just looking around Piazza dei Miracoli will open your eyes to one of the most ornate cathedrals in Italy, the largest Baptistery in Europe, and Camposanto cemetery wrapped in legend.

Furthermore, embarking on a Pisa tour with a knowledgeable guide will open your eyes to the city’s importance regarding the pursuit and development of quality education which fueled its economy since the 15th century. To this day, students from all over Italy fight for the limited spaces at the incredibly elite University of Pisa. This reality endows Pisa’s city center with vibrant bar and cafe scene. The presence of ever-changing, ever-energetic student population brings a fresh breath of life to the ancient Gothic and Romanesque buildings. It's thanks to education that the local piazzas are still mostly busy with locals rather than tourists.

However, a tour of Pisa comes in many shapes and sizes. Some Pisa city tours focus on the city center; others take you to the outskirts and surroundings. You can embark on a leisurely walking tour or go for a more dynamic exploration on a bike. Better yet, if it’s too hot to move, Pisa Segway tours are also on the table! You will be able to explore and learn about the Corso Italia (Walking street) packed with street artists and chic shops or stop at the local food market at Piazza delle Vettovaglie. Another unmissable stop is Piazza dei Cavalieri. It's perhaps one of the loveliest squares in Pisa and a former political heart of the medieval city. Today, the most picturesque building on the piazza belongs to the University. So, before you visit Pisa, browse the page to discover the right Pisa tour for you!

How to get to Pisa?

Pisa is easily reachable from both Rome and Florence by train or bus. In terms of speed and convenience, train connections offer much more satisfactory service. However, Pisa has its own airport as well as providing a connection with the majority of European cities. It acts as the low-cost option to the bigger airport in Florence.

How to get around Pisa?

Pisa city center is compact enough to allow you to comfortably explore the town by foot. All the important sites and landmarks are within a walking distance of each other. You can do so by yourself or choose to join an informative walking tour. For those not very keen on walking, bike or segway tours offer a great alternative.

How to get to the Leaning Tower of Pisa?

Piazza dei Miracoli, the home to the leaning tower, is right in the historic city center. In fact, it’s only 10 to 15-minute walk from the main train station, Pisa Centrale. It’s impossible to get lost. Just walk down the famous pedestrian street Corso Italia peppered with street vendors and artists and you will be there in no time.

Is the Leaning Tower the only tilted tower in Pisa?

Surprisingly no, though it’s the most beautiful and most famous of them all. The soft soil is a common phenomenon all across Pisa. So, keep your eye out for two other towers leaning on one side in Pisa’s Borgo Stretto.

Do I need a guide?

Naturally, it’s not a necessity but we highly recommend the experience. A guided tour, be it walking, bike or Segway tour will allow you to get to know the town far beyond its tower. Pisa got many stories to tell!

How exigent is walking around Pisa?

The town is largely flat meaning you won’t break a sweat by walking around. Though you need to be fit to climb the tower as you will need to conquer almost 300 steps.

Is Pisa expensive?

In all honesty, Pisa isn’t that pricey if you stay away from shopping in the immediate surroundings of Piazza dei Miracoli. Whether you are looking to buy a souvenir or grabbing a bite to eat, pass at least a couple of streets on your way from the Leaning Tower before you do so.

What is the Luminara?

The Luminara festival - a festival of lights - is held every June in Pisa. In case you are planning to visit around that time, don’t miss out! It’s a spectacular sight of ten thousand candles floating along the River Arno!

Useful Tips

  • Keep your belongings safe as many pickpockets operate in the area, especially around Piazza dei Miracoli.
  • For fairer pricing stir a bit further from Piazza dei Miracoli
  • Reserve tickets to climb the Pisa tower in advance, places are limited.
