History Sneak Peek

Being one of the grandest architectural monuments in Florence, Pitti Palace Florence boasts long and storied history. It was Filippo Brunelleschi (the creator of the legendary Florentine Duomo) who designed the residence for the Pitti family in 1457. Though Luca Pitti was a devoted and loyal friend of the Medici family, during his most prosperous times, he succumbed to the whim of surpassing their opulence. Hence, the grand palace idea.

In Hands of the Medici

While he managed to build a beautiful palace, it was nowhere as lush as the Palazzo Vecchio. How could that be? Well, the original manor consisted only of the central block of the large building we know today (the seven middle windows on the top floor). A few decades after Luca’s death, his family spiraled into bankruptcy and had to sell the palace to get by. To whom? The Medicis, of course.

It was, in fact, Eleonora da Toledo, the wife of the Cosimo I de'Medici (the grand duke) who decided to purchase the palace and make it the official residence of the family. The Palazzo Vecchio was simply too dark and old for her taste. Hence, for these reasons, the palace started to grow and take on its current shape. The original Pitti Palace changed and widened considerably. The architects almost fully responsible for its present look include Bartolomeo Ammannati and later Giulio and Alfonso Parigi. Only the two lateral pavilions were built during the reign of the Lorraine family.

Palazzo Pitti Today

Nowadays, the palace houses several important museums which will take your breath away you with lush pompousness. Palatine Gallery, on the first floor, treats you to a collection of the 16th and 17th-century paintings (including a few by Raphael). Next, the Royal Apartments feature luxurious gilded furniture pieces from the 19th century. The Treasury of the Grand Dukes (Silver Museum), on the ground floor, shares a collection of Medici household treasures such as silverware and other utensils. Last but not least, the Costume Gallery takes you on a journey through the extravagances of aristocratic fashion.

Book your Pitti Palace tickets in advance to save time and make the most of your visit! We also recommend you to buy Duomo Florence tickets and Uffizi Gallery tickets as it's one of the most famous tourist attractions.
