STATUE OF DAVID

Very few statues in history are as iconic as the marble Statue of David by one of Renaissance grandmasters, Michelangelo. The sculpture impresses not only with its incredible height but also with the intricate craftsmanship that gave it its lifelike, divine contours. It’s no surprise that Galleria dell’Accademia, where the sculpture resides today, is the first stop for the majority of travelers who flock to Florence. Why so much fuss over a statue? Besides being 17 feet tall, the Statue of David is one of a kind. Michelangelo wasn’t the first sculptor to portray this biblical hero, an underdog who took down the vicious giant Goliath. However, he was the first to depict him anxious and tense before the battle in his imposing simplicity before the heroic act took place. The tensed muscles and protruding veins of the defiant statue have been carved from marble as if it were clay.

No wonder that whenever you hear of Michelangelo, his name comes hand in hand with the word “masterpiece.” His works, although centuries old, don’t cease to impress us to this day. It’s easy to imagine why was Michelangelo important enough to be entrusted with works of exceptional significance, even in his early age. He created the towering statue from a single block of marble between years 1501 and 1504; he was only 26 years old. While his Pieta made Michelangelo famous, Michelangelo David sculpture cemented his position as a Renaissance master.

Initially, the David was supposed to decorate the roof of the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. However, upon completion, the committee agreed that hiding it away up there would be a colossal waste, not to mention the Herculean task of trying to get it there undamaged. Instead, the city decided to place David in the Piazza Della Signoria to showcase Florentine strength and defiance to all visitors. It wasn’t until 1873 the Statue was transferred to Accademia Gallery for preservation.

A few centuries later, demand for Statue of David tickets continues to grow. Nonetheless, the best way to experiences Michelangelo’s masterpiece is with all the little ups and downs in its long story. So, if you treat yourself to a Statue of David tour in Accademia Gallery, you won’t regret it! Explore Accademia Gallery guided tour and David Florence tickets options including a visit to the gallery and ensure you don’t miss out on this legendary works of art.

How to get to Accademia Gallery?

The closest train station is the Santa Maria Novella station which is also only 15-minute walking distance from the gallery.

When is the best time to visit?

Michelangelo David statue is one of the tops visited sights in Florence which is why it is busy most of the time. The best time to visit is during low season from October to April. July and August are the busiest. Regarding time of day, plan your visit in the early morning or late afternoon, after 5 pm when most of the crowds have gone. You will still have enough time to enjoy the gallery.

Why is the Statue of David important?

Statue of David is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture. Michelangelo Statue created it when he was only in his mid-twenties from a single piece of white Carrara marble. It doesn’t just showcase incredible craft and skill but also artistic insight. It’s the first statue to ever portray the biblical hero David, humble and tense, before the battle with the beast.

How much does Accademia Gallery Tickets cost?

Accademia Gallery tickets cost under 20 € while the Accademia Gallery tours range from 35 € to 40 €. Given the importance of the piece, the price is still reasonable. Plus, the gallery also features many other notable artworks besides David.

Do I need a guide?

While the guide is not necessary, we definitely recommend one. It’s much easier to appreciate the art and history when you know the stories of the works you are admiring.
