Pietro Leopoldo, Grand Duke of Tuscany, established Galleria dell'Accademia (Accademia Gallery) as a teaching facility in the 17th century. This is the place where the students of the adjacent Academy of Fine Arts learned the secrets of the craft. The artworks and educational models hung in the wide hallways of the Accademia since the very beginning.
The art collection grew more and more being gradually enhanced by paintings brought in from convents and monasteries suppressed by Grand Duke Peter Leopold (end of the 18th century) and later on by Napoleon (1810). In 1873, the city moved the original Michelangelo's David from the Piazza Della Signoria to the gallery. To honor the masterpiece, Emilio de Fabris, an architect, drew up a special tribune with a big skylight to house David. The Statue of David stands under that skylight to this date.
