History Sneak Peek

Pietro Leopoldo, Grand Duke of Tuscany, established Galleria dell'Accademia (Accademia Gallery) as a teaching facility in the 17th century. This is the place where the students of the adjacent Academy of Fine Arts learned the secrets of the craft. The artworks and educational models hung in the wide hallways of the Accademia since the very beginning.

Origins of Accademia's Art Collection

The art collection grew more and more being gradually enhanced by paintings brought in from convents and monasteries suppressed by Grand Duke Peter Leopold (end of the 18th century) and later on by Napoleon (1810). In 1873, the city moved the original Michelangelo's David from the Piazza Della Signoria to the gallery. To honor the masterpiece, Emilio de Fabris, an architect, drew up a special tribute with a big skylight to house David. The Statue of David stands under that skylight to this date.

Accademia Opens to Public

The Accademia Gallery opened to the public in 1892 and continued to evolve enriching its collections with precious tapestries, sculptures, and paintings of talented Italian artists. Today, the museum showcases many masterpieces as well as a rich collection of old musical instruments. In fact, the incredible collection of antique musical instruments, a gift from the Cherubini Conservatory, is the best way to peek behind the passion the Medicis felt for theater and music entertainment. You will come across the first piano ever created as well as Stradivarius’ legendary violin.

Besides the Statue of David, other notable works are:
