Before heading to the Colosseum, your guide will lead you to Piazza Venezia and talk about the square and its huge, white monument — the “Vittoriano” or “Altare della Patria”. The Capitolium Hill, at the back of the square, will also be pointed out at. Headquarters of the major of Rome, this Hill boasts at its very top a magnificent square designed by Michelangelo, which your guide will be delighted to describe. Afterward, you will start making your way towards the Colosseum.
At the end of the Imperial Forum Way you will find yourself at the Colosseum’s gates: by then the monument will be closed to the general public and its arena and dungeons will be reserved only for your group! You will have around 1:15 minutes inside the Colosseum, so you will get a chance to explore its restricted areas (Arena and Dungeons) and go round the first floor all along the building, to take fantastic pictures under the moonlight.
Ready to walk on the Arena floor like a real ‘Gladiator’? Once in front of the building, you will be met by an official Colosseum guard, who will unlock a special gate for your group. You will not enter by the usual access reserved to visitors, but a special one, which will bring you directly onto the wooden stage. Standing there you will see the entire Colosseum from a gladiator’s viewpoint and it will be easy to imagine what it was like to be inside it nearly 2,000 years ago when the building was crammed with screaming spectators.
The second part of your Colosseum Under the Moon Tour will let you descend down the Colosseum’s Dungeons, a huge underground area, where animals and gladiators awaited their turn to fight, locked in cages.
