Last minute tour

I like to travel like a true nomad and plan everything at the last possible second which makes for trouble :) Lucky for me there was a spot open with Tania’s DoTravel tour and I was able to get a full visit of the colosseum underground and Palatino. Since it’s a smaller company (compared to other popular ones) we had a more personal experience with fewer people. Tania and the group made sure we made it there on time and were able to find the group. We were a bit confused when we first arrived at the meeting point but once we found the team it was an easy walk over to the coliseum entrance with the skip the line pass. We had headphones and a very nice Italian local tour guide. We did have some minor language barriers as our guide had limited English skills as we went through the tour of the coliseum but it wasn’t a huge issue. It took about an hour to get through the coliseum arena and underground... unfortunately the underground was under reconstruction so we didn’t get the full experience. We only saw a small portion of the underground which was underwhelming considering the cost of the tour and the limited tickets. We were running a little bit late to the second half of the tour (Palatino) after lunch and the guide and other tourist were kind enough to wait ten minutes in the heat for us (which our group greatly appreciated!) The second guide, James, gave a great and captivating tour of the Palatino. It was shorter, about 30 minutes or so. Personally, I wish that the coliseum itself had more to see (I was a bit disappointed considering all the hype.... it’s really just a shell of its former self) and that the underground were fully accessible but that is out of the tour guides control... Overall DoTravel did great and I was happy with their service. I would use DoTravel again.

It was amazing

Excellent service and only 20 min waiting time for the next bus. It has the same issues at the other tour buses as well on the number of bus stops especially near the Vatican city area and stop could be nearer to the sights of interest. However, it is still a better hop on and hop off bus as compared to the rest that I had experienced.

Best tour guide experience of my life!

In short, I had a great day with DoTravel... Yes the above title may sound like a ridiculous exaggeration but the service provided by our tour coordinator and the two guides through the coliseum and the surrounding sites was the best I have experienced. The emphasis on customer care, the breadth of knowledge and experience of the entire team, and their ability to adapt and adjust to challenging situations while still providing a personal touch really made me want to come back to Rome and do a little travel with DoTravel again. Joke aside, I’m already making plans to bring my travel wary parents to Rome and I’ll be signing them up for some more excellent adventures with DoTravel. They are gonna love it! I feel a special mention of our guide coordinator is necessary. Tanya provides the kindest and most professional customer service. Additionally our two tour guides were incredible in their historical and archaeological knowledge base, but most importantly they made the tours fun and personable. James had the group of tourists in stitches with entertaining metaphors to make the history accessible. Also as a student of archaeology I was over joyed by the in depth perspectives of our PhD level guide for the Coliseum. Perhaps I was just in a really good mood on the day of our DoTravel tour. But I must say that of my past three weeks of travel and tours in Europe as well as a past dozens of vacations internationally this was the best tour group I have had the pleasure of working with. Thanks DoTravel.

Unique

This tour was different than everything else we did in Italy. The bone chapel is both eerie and fascinating at the same time. The bones are arranged in artful ways, and it was interesting to hear about the Capuchin monks. The catacombs were also very interesting, and it was great to go after hours as we had the place to ourselves. The bus ride out there was also interesting as we passed the forum, Coliseum and Circus Maximus. Be sure to take water, and a snack for the bus would be good.
