The roots of the Galleria Degli Uffizi reach all the way back to the 16th century. Cosimo I de Medici, first Grand Duke of Tuscany, commissioned its construction in 1560 to create offices for Florentine judges, merchants, and magistrates. The gallery as we know it today opened to the public two hundred years after, in 1769.
