Description

This Tuscany trip from Florence will take you out on the sea! Take a break from the hustle and bustle of Florences city center and enjoy a lovely relaxing day exploring Giglio and Giannutri islands. These Tuscan islands are both famous for their heavenly beaches, crystal clear waters, untouched nature and historic landmarks.

First, a comfy air-conditioned minibus or a coach will take to Talamone, a historic seaside town which port served as a strategic commercial point throughout history. From there, you will take a boat and enjoy a 1-hour ride with sea breeze ruffling your hair to the Giglio Island. Once on the island, you will be free to explore it by yourself. For instance, visit the beaches using public transport or rented scooter (both available yet optional and at your own expenses).

At lunchtime, you may choose to get back on board and continue the mission to the Giannutri island or stay enjoying Giglio Island. Selecting the first option will take you on a 40-minute boat ride with views of spectacular beaches with clear waters. Again, once on the island, you can explore on your own or pay for an optional guided tour of the ancient Roman Villa on top of the hill. At last, the tour takes you back to Florence.

History Sneak Peek

Giglio Island

Giglio island, or as they call it in Italian, Isola del Giglio, is a mountainous island of volcanic origins in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The island rises to 498 m (1634 feet) and has an area of 21 square kilometers (8 square miles). It's so small, yet, incredibly breathtaking! Despite its modest size it produces wine and has a lively fishing industry.

The main tourist attractions are the medieval Giglio Castello village, the Campese bathing resort, and pure sandy beaches. The port, Giglio Porto, on the east coast, is the only landing spot on the island.

Giannutri Island
Giannutri is the southernmost island of Tuscany. It has a unique crescent-moon shape. Usually, the boats land at Spalmatoio Bay, but if the wind is in favor, its possible to also land at Maestra Bay. In fact, the two bays are the sole points where the otherwise rocky island opens onto a small beach where you can enjoy a swim.

Please beware! The island is part of the Arcipelago Toscano National Park, so, in some parts, swimming is forbidden. However, scuba diving opportunities are plentiful.

You can also enjoy a bit of history! Not far from Maestra Bay, lay the imposing ruins of a Roman villa from the 2nd century BC. It used to be home to an ancient patrician family of merchants, Domizi Enobarbi, including the husband of Agrippina and the mother of Nero!

So what do you say? Let's explore the blue part of Tuscany. Book your Tuscany trip to Giglio and Giannutri islands today!
