History Sneak Peek

The first incarnations of Chianti wine occurred in the 13th century. Unlike today, its first versions were white but delicious enough to make the vineyards famous. Soon, people started to refer to the whole area as Chianti, not just the wine.

It all became official when, in Middle Ages, three villages (Radda, Gaiole, Castellina) formed a League of Chianti. The territory of these three winemaking villages became the spiritual and historical soul of the Chianti region.

As the Chianti wine became gradually more popular, more and more Tuscan towns wanted to carry this label Chianti. Hence, the boundaries of the area witnessed countless expansions and subdivisions. Unavoidably, the variety of soil and microclimates caused the wine to be of a wide range of quality. The issue got so out of hand, by the end of the 20th century, public associated once complex Chianti with mass-market wine.

The DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) put an end to this. Today, only a few wineries can brand their wines in Chianti. Each winery has its own special recipe which, nonetheless, has to abide by the strict DOCG rules.
