On this walking tour you will discover the Imagine Peace Tower, a striking light installation conceived by Yoko Ono in memory of John Lennon and as part of their ongoing campaign for peace. The tower is conceived as a tranquil wishing well; its sides bear the inscription "IMAGINE PEACE" in 24 languages, creating a powerful international message that transcends borders. When lit, a mesmerising arrangement of light beams is routed through mirrored corridors to ascend into the Icelandic sky, producing a dramatic and contemplative spectacle.
The installation is powered by geothermal energy supplied by Reykjavik Energy, reflecting a commitment to environmental sustainability that complements the tower's message. Its creation was the result of collaboration between Yoko Ono, the City of Reykjavík, the Reykjavik Art Museum and Reykjavik Energy, making the project an example of collective cultural action.
Viðey island itself offers layers of interest: historic trading sites, public artworks and varied coastal habitats. From vantage points on the island you can take in panoramic views of the Reykjavík skyline and surrounding seascape. For those who cannot attend in person, a live stream of the tower can be viewed from Skarfabakki pier in Reykjavík.
