The construction of Florence Cathedral (formally Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore) started at the end of the 13th century under the leadership of Arnolfo di Cambio. However, the part of the dome which extends over the greater portion of the exterior was added by Filippo Brunelleschi whole two centuries later. The statues of both architects stand proudly outside the cathedral, on the right.
Two centuries to build a cathedral! What a task! Furthermore, it took even more time (until the 19th century) to fully decorate it the structure. Still, we must admit it was worth it. The facade boasts a lovely combination of white, pink, and green marble. On the other hand, the interior is in sharp contrast with the light color pallet of the exterior. The dark coolness that prevails on the inside of the cathedral is particularly appreciated during summer.
There is plenty! For example, make sure you don't miss the rather peculiar clock sitting above the entrance on the inside of the church. Designed by Paolo Uccello in 1443 the clock still follows “Ora Italia” according to which the 24-hour day finishes at sunset, not midnight. Next, ensure you get to see the Last Judgment fresco by Giorgio Vasari, it's the most important artwork in the complex.
