The region was full of natural treasures as well as had a strategic location. Therefore, it flourished and prospered. The major cities in the area gradually gained their independence and formed republics. By the high Middle Ages, Arezzo, Pisa, Siena, Lucca, Pistoia, and Florence became wealthy centers of trade.
