Join us on this exciting adventure to Catalonia’s southern coast! We will travel to the capital of ‘Hispania Citerior,’ one of three ancient Roman provinces on the Iberian Peninsula. Your expert guide will join you on a journey back in time to when gladiators, centurions and emperors wrote the mythical and bloody history of the Roman Empire. Afterward, your group will visit the Mediterranean town of Sitges, steeped in modernist charm.
Discover Tarragona with your expert guide will pick you up at your hotel or apartment in private transport, located 62 miles (100 km) south of Barcelona, on the Costa Dorada. [readmore] The city is home to one of the most important and best preserved Roman archaeological sites in Spain, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Here, you will admire the impressive 'Devil’s Bridge'. This aqueduct, 711 feet (217 meters) long and 85 feet (26 meters) high, is a spectacular example of the advanced Roman engineering.
Next, you'll begin the walking tour, where you will discover the many still preserved remains of this civilization, while our guide provides their most exciting stories. You will be able to explore the ancient walls surrounding the city and be immersed into one of the best-preserved circuses in Europe, hidden under building structures from the 19th century. You will see as the traces of the ancient Roman forum live in the present with the medieval and modern Tarragona.
Finally, you will be amazed at the ruins of the amphitheater located on the shore of the Mediterranean since the 2nd century and where bloody battles between gladiators took place. We will do a walking tour of the winding streets and hidden corners of the labyrinthine Sitges city center and see several examples of architectural modernism, including the Casa Bacardi and Casa del Rellotge. You will hear fascinating stories about the 'Americanos’ who became rich off this 'new' continent.
But the fame of Sitges - the 'Saint Tropez of Spain' - is no doubt due to its idyllic seaside promenade. As we walk along it, we will discover the beautiful church of San Bartolomé and Santa Tecla, the grand staircase, the Maricel Palace and the charming ‘Quiet Corner’. Musicians enliven the atmosphere here, adding to the wonderful journey that leads down to the beach.
End the day on Playa San Sebastian, named “the best urban beach in Europe” by the New York Times. Relax on one of its scenic terraces or take a dip in the crystal blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
