History Sneak Peek
The Palio di Siena (also known as Il Palio) is a thrilling horse race that takes place twice a year, on July 2 and August 16, in the medieval Siena. During the event, ten riders dressed in district colors ride bareback in circles around the Piazza del Campo covered with a thick layer of dirt for the occasion. The race itself runs three laps of the Piazza and normally doesn't last longer than 90 seconds. It's so speedy many jockeys end up flying off their horses as they don't manage to survive the sharp turns!
Il Palio origins go back to Middle Ages when the central piazza was the site of all public games and bullfights. In 1590, after the Grand Duke of Tuscany outlawed bullfights, the city started organizing all kinds of races in the Piazza del Campo. Some of them include buffalo-back races (bufalate) and donkey-back races while horse races happened elsewhere. The first Palio race as we know it today took place in 1633. At first, the live horse racing only happened on July 2. The other date (August 16) was added in 1701.
Its a one of a kind event that brings the whole city of Siena together. The streets are full of tourists and locals alike, all brought together by the thrill of the race. Book the Palio Horse Race Experience with us today and make your Tuscan holidays
