Valletta, Malta’s capital and a UNESCO World Heritage city, offers a compact and compelling history on almost every street corner. Founded and transformed by the Order of St John from the 16th century, the city presents a rich Baroque character with traces of Mannerist, Neo‑Classical and modern interventions. Visitors will notice the defensive bastions, elegant palaces, intimate churches and terraced gardens that make Valletta an extraordinary open‑air museum.

The city’s historic identity is captured in its name, given in honour of Jean Parisot de la Valette, and in its Italianate title Città Umilissima. Despite the scars left by World War II, Valletta retains a dignified, layered beauty: grand facades, narrow alleys, and public spaces that frame views across the Grand Harbour. Barrakka Gardens offers a particularly spectacular panorama and a moment to appreciate the scale and strategic importance of the harbour below.

As you walk through the bustling streets you will reach St John’s Co‑Cathedral, celebrated for its lavish interior and for housing Caravaggio’s The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, widely regarded as one of the artist’s masterpieces and notable for being signed by him. The tour concludes with the Malta Experience audio‑visual presentation, which contextualises the island’s long and varied story, helping visitors take away a clear sense of Malta’s cultural heritage and historical significance.
