Malta

This unique tour is dedicated to Malta's British history from 1798 to 1979, with a strong focus on the island's experience during the Second World War. You will learn why the British came to Malta, how the islands became strategically vital and the reasons for their eventual departure. The narrative places military events in human context, revealing how people lived, coped and organised their defences under sustained bombardment.

The visit begins in Vittoriosa where you will examine fortifications originally built by the Knights and later adapted for British defence. The itinerary includes a descent into the maze-like, rock-hewn air-raid shelters used throughout the siege, offering a vivid sense of wartime conditions. After a short walk around Vittoriosa, the group travels by bus to Valletta.

In Valletta you will walk to the Upper Barrakka Gardens for spectacular views over the Grand Harbour, then follow streets that pass the Palace, the Second World War Victory Kitchen, Queen Victoria’s statue and the ruined Royal Opera House. After a lunch break there is a visit to the Malta War Museum at Fort St. Elmo, where exhibits such as the Gloster Gladiator fuselage and an E-boat illustrate the island’s role in Mediterranean operations. The tour blends architecture, personal stories and museum displays to bring Malta’s British and WWII heritage to life.
