The tour will be split into 2 parts with a 15 to 20 minutes break in the between. We will start with a 1 to 1.25-hour tour of the Colosseum first. Here, you will learn about the innovative techniques used by the ancient Roman engineers to build this monumental giant and how it survived through the centuries. You will discover the political and social reasons that led to its construction as well as the games that took place in it. You will hear about gladiator combats, venationes, naumachiae and much more, and you will be told about what is proven history and what is just a myth built around this spectacular amphitheater in later centuries.
But most excitingly, you will get to have a real sense of the Colosseum and of the events that took place in it, by entering the very exclusive Undergrounds and the Arena. These areas are not accessible to regular ticket owners.
The Undergrounds were the backstage for the games which took place in the Arena above them. Here you will see the rooms where animals such as tigers, bears and giraffes were locked before being employed in the games as well as the labyrinths where the frenetic preparations of the games and of the spectacle’s scenery took place.
Then you will walk into the Arena through the Porta Libitinaria itself. As a final part of the Colosseum tour, you will get access to the first tier, from where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Arena and the surrounding valley.
In the second part, you will visit the nearby suggestive area of the Roman Forums and the Palatine Hill. This tour will last about 45 minutes after which you can stay within the area and explore it further for as long as you wish. Here you will get a portrait of what everyday life in ancient Rome was since the Roman Forum was the economic, political, juridical and social center of the city.
The Palatine Hill, one of Rome’s seven hills, was the emperors’ and aristocracy’s favorite place, as well as the very place where the legend sets the foundation of the city.
