What you'll do

During the tour, you will see fantastic street art and major landmarks of Marseille: an outstanding 16th-century building of the old charity, the Cathédrale de la Major with its striking baroque style, and the modern MUCEM dedicated to the Mediterranean. The contrast of ancient and contemporary architecture is a highlight and a real architectural success that most visitors appreciate.

In the morning, the route passes the famous fish market and the colourful Noailles market, a bustling place for fruits and vegetables from here and elsewhere. Noailles is one of Marseille's most atypical and lively districts, full of aromas and daily life.

Strolling the streets, you will savour the smells that come from small restaurants and food stalls. You may hear many languages at the bend of an alley, yet the Marseille accent remains unmistakable. The area is a tapestry of colour, flavours and warm people from multiple cultures, all mingling in one place.

The second part of the programme explores Le Panier, the oldest district in France, perched on the northern edge of the Old Port. Here, cultural richness is revealed in narrow alleys where artists' studios and local shops are interwoven. You will encounter producers and artisans who explain their craft, from distillation to traditional recipes.

Expect to discover local specialities such as pastis and absinthes at a small distillery, and regional starters like panisse, goat cheeses, traditional breads, olive oil with tapenades, anchoïades and sardinades in typical Marseille shops. Along the way, there are local stories, customs and small anecdotes that bring the district to life.

The walk finishes back at the quays of the Old Port, where you can continue to explore or return to the metro. Enjoy your meal and the authentic flavours of Marseille!
