Discover The Netherlands

The Netherlands, located in northwestern Europe, is one of the most recognisable countries in the world. It is a country where modern charm meets historic culture, and there is something to do for every type of traveller. Famous for its picturesque canals, exquisitely colourful tulip fields, classic windmills and its famed cycling culture, the Netherlands is a destination that feels both relaxed and full of life.

Our favourite things about The Netherlands

The History
01

The History

The Netherlands has a rich and varied history, and examples of it can be seen all over the country. One of the best places to start is in Amsterdam, the country’s capital city. The historic canal ring and traditional narrow houses provide a glimpse into the country’s urban past, while numerous museums across the country tell stories of Dutch art, culture, trade and more.

One of the most famous historic artefacts in the Netherlands is Anne Frank’s house in Amsterdam. This is where the well-known Jewish diarist hid from the Nazis during the Second World War.

The Canals
02

The Canals

It would be remiss to talk about the Netherlands without mentioning its canals. Amsterdam is particularly famous for its waterways, which flow through the city centre and are lined with historic and distinctive buildings.

Utrecht is also well-known for its canals, while smaller towns often have city-centre waterways. Grabbing a coffee and going for a stroll along these waterways is an excellent way to experience the Netherlands on foot, and is particularly pleasant in the summer months.

Cycling Culture
03

Cycling Culture

There are approximately 6 million more bikes than people in the Netherlands, making it the highest bikes-to-people ratio in the world. Cycling is the predominant form of transport in Dutch cities, while towns and even villages often follow suit.

Amsterdam is extremely easy to navigate by bicycle, while many other towns and cities also feature dedicated cycle lanes and paths. This makes exploring the Dutch countryside as well as cities on two wheels much easier and very appealing.

Tulips & Windmills
04

Tulips & Windmills

Two iconic symbols of Dutch culture: tulips and windmills. During spring, fields of colourful tulips create some of the country’s most iconic scenery, and heading out of the big cities into the countryside is by far the best way to see them. The Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse are one of the best places to see them.

Then there are the windmills. These traditional structures are scattered all over the Dutch countryside, although Kinderdijk is one of the most well-known places to see them. Together, a day trip out of the city to see the tulips and the windmills is one of the quintessential Dutch experiences, and is perfect for seeing the beauty of the countryside in all of its glory.
