Van Gogh & Rembrandt in Amsterdam explores the creative relationship between two of history’s most renowned artists, presenting a curated dialogue between their works.
The exhibition pairs paintings and etchings by Rembrandt with masterpieces by Van Gogh, using letters written by Van Gogh to his brother as a guiding thread to explain connections, inspirations and artistic development. Housed within the historic interior of Noorderkerk, the presentation transforms the entire monument into an immersive visual environment.
A large-scale son‑et‑lumière (sound and light) production wraps the architecture in projected imagery and audio, creating a 360° canvas that envelops visitors and reframes familiar works in a new context.
The experience invites visitors to follow thematic juxtapositions that highlight Rembrandt’s techniques, compositional choices and use of perspective alongside Van Gogh’s expressive responses.
The installation balances contemplative moments with dynamic sequences, designed to engage both devoted art lovers and those newer to these painters. By situating artworks and archival letters within the church’s atmospheric space, the exhibition offers a fresh, emotionally resonant way to understand influence, craft and historical continuity between two masterpieces of Dutch art.
